- Michael Köhlmeier was born in 1949 in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, where he still lives today. Köhlmeier has enjoyed great success with his postmodern retelling of the muth of Odysseus. In addition to novels, he has also written film scripts; in the collection Bevor Max kam, he uses his take on the Austrian tradtition of the Kaffeehausliterat, the author who sits (and, sometimes, writes) in a coffee house. The collection's short stories were origianlly published in the weekend edition of a Vienna newspaper. He was awarded the 1988 Johann-Peter-Hebel Prize and the 1994 Manès-Sperber Prize.
