- HÄNDLER, Ernst-Wilhelm
- Ernst-Wilhelm Händler
was born in 1953, and now lives in Regensburg. In 1995 he published
his first book, Stadt mit Häusern (City with Houses),
a collection of stories. In his novel Fall,an excerpt of
which is published in Vol. 5, No. 1, Händler fuses the levels
of reality and imagination. Oscillating between locations in Germany
and Italy, the novel presents its protagonist Georg as identical
with the "writer" in Italy; however, Georg's cousin and
rival, Friedrich, is perhaps only a figment of Georg's imagination,
and so are perhaps the trips to Italy. The Café Roma, in
the excerpt printed in Vol. 5, No. 1, is of course in Germany. Thomas
Bernhard's postmodern novel Die Auslöschugn (The Erasure)
provides the subtext for Händler's novel.
